Status Checks

Status Checks are brief, one page paper and pencil exams that take about two minutes to complete.

The answers are on the back of the page (or provided through discussion after the test), and each student grades their own exam. Then the exams are turned in.

These Status Checks do not count toward the students’ overall grade. They are distributed at the end of a teaching module or lecture and are designed to accomplish three goals.

  1. They enable the student to see if they understood the important elements of the training.
  2. They reinforce the important elements of the training.
  3. They provide the teachers with immediate feedback on the success (or lack of success) with their teaching.

If one student does poorly on the Status Check, then that student would benefit probably from some extra training in this subject.

If many students do poorly on the Status Check, then the teacher needs to revise how the material is being presented.

Here are some Status Checks I’ve used in teaching the students:

Status Check – Vaginal Delivery

Breast Exams

Status Check – Pelvic and Pap Smear

Breech Delivery

Pre-Eclampsia

Pregnancy Exam

Status Check – EFM

Status Check – Scrub Gown and Glove Procedures

Shoulder Dystocia

Vulvar and Vaginal Disease
